A new version of the build calculator is available!
The Good (new features) -No more page reloads. -Formatted output for the Bots forums. -Quick find. -Improved error detection. -Reverse compatibility with old build links. The Bad (trade offs) You will have to use Firefox to use this. It's a solid browser and it's good to have anyway. This really is one of the cases where going with the crowd isn't a bad idea. The calc doesn't look right in other browsers unfortunately. Plus the Javascript performance is significantly lower in other browsers (I noticed this especially in IE). It's already slow enough in Firefox, so using other browsers isn't really an option I'm afraid. If I can tweak it enough in the future not only for better performance but also for correct display, then I may be able to allow other browsers. But until then, you'll have to use Firefox. Sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, no more page reloads means it's no longer my server that is processing the data. Your computer is now the one doing the work. If you have a fast computer, this isn't a big deal, but for those with old computers, you may prefer to use the old version, which I will be leaving online. The real bottleneck is the initial loading of the calculator, so after that, things will go smoother, but some of the more difficult calculations will take time. Random Thoughts This is by far the most ambitious and difficult project I've taken on. Because it was written primarily in Javascript (there are a few small snippets of PHP to make some stuff work), you have the ability to view the source if you'd like to get an idea of how much work goes into something like this. There are undoubtedly still a few bugs around, despite extensive testing. It will take some time to track them down and fix them, but it will get done. I will also be making performance adjustments in the future, namely to the initialization process. I'm guessing there's a lot of redundancy in what it first loads. So enjoy the new tool and let me know what you think! |
